SNS, brand awareness and corporate branding: An Introduction

June 26, 2010 at 10:34 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Become a fan. LIKE. Join group. Twit. These are just some of the words widely used by people using social networking sites (SNS). People just can’t get enough hitting those buttons and businesses will take it from there…

Why SNS?

From my OC152 class earlier, if facebook’s a country it will be the third largest country in the world. 95% of employers are using LinkedIn. As of February 2010, there are at least 50 million tweets per day. Groups have been formed and fanpages have been created and these numbers are unstoppable. Maximizing the potential of facebook, coca-cola company’s fanpage has almost 6 million fans. Niche groups all over. So the question now is why not?

What’s up?

Facebook has the most users, as of now, having at least 200 million users. One of it’s feature is everyone’s favorite, *drum roll* the FANPAGE! This is one of the ways, if not the best, to gather followers and supporters. Or can I say it is the best way to collect in one place followers scattered all over the web particularly on SNS, ehem, facebook! Most companies and corporations use this for Online and advocacy campaigns and /or for their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The features available on fanpages makes it possible to post pictures, digital copy of posters, commercial videos, and links for a tag-your-friends kind of promotion. Twitter’s microblogging is an OK in promotions and announcements of links & events. SNS is “viral marketing on the cheap.” It is quite simple and does not require a large investment of time and it is also almost always free.

A warning though, it is important to learn how to engage the people for they have, as I’ve said in my earlier post, been made impatient  by the internet. Where does corporate branding and brand awareness come in? It is when the SNS has been designed based on the company’s values and artifacts. The personality or the image of the company should be carefully built as the competitors are just a few clicks away. Brand Awareness can be easily achieved by introducing the company’s profile and what it does. The real challenge is corporate branding. Are you ready to take up on it?

Virtual mall, fast-fact addicts and the Internet

June 19, 2010 at 3:25 pm (Uncategorized) (, , )

As an individual, I found ways to earn money through the internet. I’ve been maximizing it to my advantage. I have an online shop and I’m also a part time online tutor. The internet has made people more practical and versatile in a way that it is opening up new ways to have additional income apart from their full time job. But it has also created short attention span to people; one paragraph with five sentences posted on a website will surley bore net surfers. Take Twitter for example, with its limited characters, it only allows its users to post short statements or mini blogs about the recent happenings on their lives.

While reading Bill Gates’essay, Shaping the Internet Age, I didn’t feel that it was written ten years ago as the points he raised still applies today. I took four of this important points:

The virtual mall

True enough. Gates wrote that “every business has to make its products and services and inteface more attractive than competitors that are only a few mouse-clisks away.” In a mall, it’s the same but it deals more with proximity to the entrance or to the most popular hang out. Internet- based businesses have sprouted everywhere; we now have what we call electronic commerce (e-commerce). There’s basically the so-called virtual mall, the more creative the product and the lower the price; the more customers buy or reserve merchandise. In return, buyers can look for products that best fit their budget, style and preferences.

Let’s talk…now!

Keeping in touch is never a problem. Snail mails are no longer the most loved method of connecting with relatives abroad. Post office are losing their profits but the people prefer it to be that way. I can talk to my aunt in the US real time and at that I can also feel her anger and emotions real time. Long ditance relationships are difficult but it became easier to handle thanks to the Internet. It indeed breaks barriers be it cultural, language or geographical. Connecting to people in all parts of the world has never been this simple.

Get it?

There’s the problem now of information shock where basically everything is flowing on the internet. There will be thousands of result on just one topic that created fast-fact addicts. Patience is not a virtue anymore. It will reamin a noun. Next will be waiting. After a few more years, after developments and advancements on the internet. Everything related to patience and waiting will be the least used word.  Piracy also became rampant. As Gates said, it is “at virtually no cost.” There is no clear rules about cyber crime. Movies in the works already has a copy in the market, black market that is. Ever watched a Transfomers movie one week before it’s been released on the theaters? Though not much editing, body harness on the actors can be seen clearly.  The world is at your finger tips even your crush’ world. Heard about the word stalking? Of course! Gone are the days of following your love interest to know where they live. Before friendster, now facebook. No need for friends to ask his number or email. The Internet can be your bestfriend and resource person.

Companies are in competition not only in print and broadcast advertisements but also online. Their aim has moved to SEO. On my OJT, my co-intern and I were asked to make a PR plan for the launching of their Social Networking Site on facebook not just for possible partners or stakeholders but for their family members also. Sites has been more personalized and designed to be able to relate to the people more. In that project, we were asked to create the personality of the profile and not just an admin who will handle it. Why SEO? When searching on Google, yes Google, people focus on the first page of the results and disregards the next pages. It will be quite an advantage to be on the first page much more on the top pick.

Less and less people enter the library. It is a quiet place for everyone to concentrate…sleeping. Why? It’s faster and convenient to search the net. Google is everyone’s hero on the last minute papers and assignments. Why would people waste their time standing in front of huge book shelves when they can download e-books at the comfort of their homes? Newspapers have online copies of their article. “Online copy” or soft copy are students favorite works. Online papers, online exams and online classes? What a way to promote laziness. I’m not really against it, it’s a good paperless campaign but there should be some limitation to it.

After 10 years of Bill Gates’ essay such developments had already been done. And there are more possibilities after another ten years. The Internet has definitely shaped the way we work, the way we think and the way we act. It had created more evil yet it has its own ways of helping the society and the people. Somehow, it teaches us to be responsible enough and draw the line for ourselves.

June 19, 2010 at 1:17 pm (The Dreamer) (, , , , )

Dreams are nothing unless you have the will to make it all come true.

Yes? Yes, I believe so. Little as I may look, I have dreams bigger than me. And Organizational Communication 152 will not hinder me in achieving them.

What am I talking about? Let me first introduce myself.

I’m Ariane, an impulsive 4th year OrCom student in UP Manila. I’m a person who normally does not think things through like this introductory blog. 😛 And being in OrCom is a result of that impulse. No, I don’t regret the decision I made three years ago. In fact, I find myself delighted sitting in an OrCom class or the course’s electives. I would have never done the things I did have I been in another field. I would have never stood in front of a class to make a speech or engage in a discussion. Though I must admit, I’m still in the process of getting used to these things.

Most of the time when I’m not impulsive, I’m passive. Ask me where to eat for lunch, it’s already dinner but we haven’t eaten yet. I go by the decision of the majority. I stay at the back and would likely choose to be alone than to always be with someone else. Loner much? Again no, rather than being sensitive to my companion or my companion being sensitive to me, I’d like not to bother anyone. It’s kinda hard to deal with a situation where your friend would tell you he is tired when you still have errands to do or places to go. Will you leave him sitting in a bench somewhere or would you set aside your concerns? See what I mean? 😐

I love sleeping, eating, reading manga, watching anime, playing video games and spending time with my family. Where does OrCom come in? I dunno. Eating? 😀  My interests are far from the course outline which is New Social Media. Although I have facebook and twitter accounts, I basically have little knowledge about them. When there’s no YM confe for school works or student to teach (I’m an online tutor btw) , I usually don’t go online that much. One good thing is that I’m still exposed to NSM, it’s almost everywhere.

Going back, why did I say OC 152 will not hinder me in achieveing my dreams?

I’m already in my fourth year yet I haven’t developed skills necessary to survive the corporate jungle. I’m afraid I’m different from my batch mates. Different in a sense that without preparations I will fuck everything up whereas my batch mates can carry on their day-to-day life in OrCom or should I say UP in general. It takes a while for me to absorb things and understand them so I believe that this sem, as sir Barry said, will be very busy. With that, I have to work hard. Right? 😉

What do I do now? Write blogs of course! One blog a week, 15 in total (minimum actually). This is my last year [hopefully] and I want to make it a wonderful experience that’s why I vowed to enjoy blogging and leaving comments to my OC152-mates every week. I will try, yes try, to make my blogs fun, insightful and spontaneous, to make it more OrCom-ish. Here I go then! 🙂
